When you set out to build a chicken coop, there are three things to consider. First is the number of chickens, as the house size will depend on your chicken count. Next is the space allocated to each chicken inside the chicken pen. An average space would be 3 to 4 square feet/chicken and the third factor is what kind of design do you want, a portable or a fixed coop.
Portable
A portable chicken pen means that it is movable. You can shift it anywhere in the yard you want. This is feasible when you have to move them away if any climate change takes place. They are even easy to maintain and clean. One spot doesn’t necessarily have to end up being dirty or smelly. However, portable coops are suitable only if it is a small scale coop. So if you have a large number of chickens, this might not be a very good idea.
Fixed
A fixed chicken house is difficult to make as you have to keep many points in mind when you decide on making them. A lot of factors such as fencing, strong foundation, wiring, netting, etc, are important while building a fixed chicken coop. The appearance of a fixed chicken coop needs to be worked on too. Your coop should look clean, well maintained and colorful, instead of being messy and shabby. A beautiful fixed chicken pen actually enhances the look of your backyard and thus your home too.
